DICE LA / Battlefield 1

A WWI first-person shooter that features 31 large-scale maps hosting 64-player battles between infantry, tanks, planes, boats and behemoth war machines.

Features Overview

I joined the Battlefield 1 team right after the second expansion, In The Name Of The Tsar, had shipped. My primary focus was to design Weapon Assignments, Service Assignments, Achievements, Medals and Dog Tags for the remaining two expansion packs, Turning Tides and Apocalypse. Using the Frostbite editor I designed, implemented and tested these designs for those final two expansion packs, as well as all Year 2 content releases.

I also drove the designs of additional features, such as the consumable Wine Bottle melee weapon, the Master Man Easter Egg puzzles, the Battlefield V reveal puzzle, the Affliction system, and the Seven Deadly Sin and Four Horsemen Dog Tag sets. I wrote many Dog Tag descriptions, including the Master Man narrative. Other small tasks include implementing Dog Tag art, capturing weapon and vehicle skin thumbnails, and assisting in design brainstorms and playtests of other projects.

Assignments

Following the poor reception of the Weapon Assignments and Service Assignments released in In The Name Of The Tsar, I decided to take the completion criteria in a new direction. While still retaining variety and difficulty, I wrote Assignments that would encourage the player to play each class to their intended strengths. The reception was very positive, with multiple Reddit posts pointing out that the new Assignments were an improvement on previous ones.

Easter Eggs

As a huge fan of the epic puzzle-driven Phantom Easter Eggs from Battlefield 4, I immediately dove into writing puzzles and riddles for the new Easter Egg of Battlefield 1. I wrote the many of the puzzles for the Escalation, Omen, and Peacekeeper steps of the Easter Egg. I also helped design the Dog Tag, skin and weapon rewards, and wrote the story blurbs that accompanied the Dog Tags. I also designed the arrow and valve puzzles in the Battlefield V reveal Easter Egg.

Afflictions

In the Apocalypse expansion we added Afflictions; negative perks that players could equip to make the game more challenging. They were a polarizing design idea, both in the office and with players. However, with careful balance and playtesting I felt they were a fun and inoffensive addition to the game. After release, the complaints of their negative affect on team play ceased, and many players even admitted to enjoying them despite their concerns. I also helped design a special set of Dog Tags were included for those that could complete a series of challenges with Afflictions equipped.
